Project Description

Research: The Roaring Twenties Study Committees

Below are the general topics for committee study on various aspects of life in America in the 1920’2.  Each committee will give a short oral report (five-ten minutes), provide visual illustrations, and submit a bibliography of the sources consulted for the report.  (See below for a model of the proper format for your bibliographies.  The sort of report and graphs, charts, drawings, etc. required will depend on the nature of your committee’s research.

We will spend the two days in the library so that each committee has an opportunity to get a good start on the project together.  Grades will be based on the thoroughness of you committee’s research, the effectiveness of you oral presentation, and the requirements for source documents.

  1. Suffragettes:  Who were some of the major figures in the early fight for women’s rights in the Country?  What was the condition of the woman in the U.S. in the 1920’s?  What rights were these women fighting for?  What methods did these women employ for their fight?  (Sit -ins?  Demonstrations) Design a poster that a suffragette might have used.

  1. Inventions:  What were some of the inventions of the 1920’s?  What were some of the “technological” advances of the period and what impact did the advance have on the society?  Design a model or a draft of a design for one or more of the advances of the period.

  1. Gangsters:  Who were some of the gangsters of the period?  Was there a rise in the crime of the underworld during the period?  What crimes were these individuals typically involved in?  What steps were law enforcement agencies taking to stop crime?  Design “Wanted” posters for some of the more notorious gangsters of the period.

  1. Famous people:  Research the important people of the period.  Write a Who’s Who of the 1920’s in America or write a couple of articles for a magazine like People.

  1. Prohibition:  Research the beginning of the movement in the U.S. through the repeal of the amendment.  Research the special language associated with the illegal trade in alcohol.

  1. Entertainment:  How did the people spend their leisure time in the 1920’s?  Write a calendar magazine for the period- something like the S.F Chronicle’s “Date book.”  What were some of the popular dances of the period?  Lead the class in one of those dances.

  1. Fashions:  Research the fashions, hairstyles, and fads of the period.  Create a fashion magazine for the twenties

  1. Music:  Research the music that was popular during the period.  Who were the major figures in the development of that music?  Play excerpts from some of the popular songs of the period.
